Converting Visitors into Donors with Smart, Automated Follow Up
Leveraging e-commerce tactics for fundraising.

stronger response!
Situation
To boost online donor conversion, the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) piloted an innovative “abandoned donation” strategy—an approach adapted from the e-commerce world and customized for nonprofit fundraising.
Solution
We integrated automated technology with the donation form to identify when donors navigated away from the donation page before completing their gift. This triggered a personalized email reminder, making it easier for donors to return to the site to finish their donation. Then, to intervene even earlier in the process, we added an exit intent pop-up on the donation page to encourage visitors to complete their gift before leaving the donation page.
higher average gift
stronger response rate
Success
The results were impressive: these “reminder” emails generated gifts with an average donation 22% higher than organic web joins and achieved a response rate ten times stronger than standard email appeals. Even better, once the automation was built, the system continued to engage new potential donors month after month—requiring virtually no ongoing management while delivering steady incremental revenue.
This approach worked because it met donors where they already were—online, in real time. Life may have pulled them away, but a friendly reminder and a one-click path back to giving was all they needed to complete their act of support. It’s a low-touch, high-impact way to ensure that every expression of interest has the potential to grow into lasting stewardship.
