The Dispatch by Avalon

Dear friends,

Best wishes to everyone managing various stages of back-to-school. Whether it’s the end of summer with young children (and you’re secretly ready to embrace a regular routine), or the series of lasts and firsts for kids going off to school, I know it can be a rollercoaster of emotion. Hang in there, parents and caregivers, and thank you to everyone providing coverage for colleagues who are taking time off.

250 Years of USPS

Happy anniversary to the United States Postal Service! On July 26, 1775, the Continental Congress assumed control of North American postal operations and appointed Benjamin Franklin as Postmaster General. The Smithsonian’s Postal Museum has launched a unique celebration in honor of this milestone, including a timeline of its history and an Objects Spotlight.

Despite wide concerns about the current business model, we are all acutely aware of the impact on fundraising. Direct mail still represents 80% of all revenue raised, and the vulnerability of the U.S. postal system is a serious concern. I was part of a panel at the Bridge Conference about the future of fundraising, and we talked about this question with varying degrees of confidence. The overwhelming conclusion was that the Postal Service is essential, and what it looks like moving forward will certainly be interesting.

There’s much speculation and uncertainty, but I can promise you this: Avalon and the industry at large will ensure that direct mail fundraising continues to reach its intended audience. Cheers to the U.S. Postal Service on this incredible milestone.

Messaging Foundations

Frank O’Brien shared a helpful slide deck on “Building Your Messaging Foundation.” The deck, which he presented at DMAW Creative Day 2025, covers essentials like knowing your audience, building a case, defining your voice, and storytelling. It’s a great review of best practices for anyone developing their message—and a terrific 101 for new fundraisers.

Frank O’Brien’s Four Case for Engagement Questions

  1. What problem are you aiming to solve?
  2. What compelling solutions are you seeking to advance?
  3. Why is your group the right vehicle?
  4. What role have you created for people to play?

Resilience in Action

Our clients at ASCD maintain a public archive of their Educational Leadership magazine. The first issue, published in October 1943, addresses challenges presented by the Second World War and even features a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt. As VP Rebecca Shapalis pointed out, the archive provides valuable perspective on today’s issues in education. It’s also an encouraging reminder that history is full of committed individuals working together for the greater good. This long tradition of dedication and resilience is inspiring.

Travis Kelce + Otters = Monterey Bay Magic

NFL (and Taylor Swift fandom) star Travis Kelce recently shared his love for otters on the New Heights podcast, and our client, the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA), didn’t miss a beat. They quickly co-signed his enthusiasm for the adorable creatures, and extended a warm invitation for Travis to meet their rescued otters in person. We think it’s a perfect match! Well done to MBA for quickly leveraging this unique opportunity to build visibility and awareness.

Otters are “not just cute animals but, like [Kelce] is on the football field, they are important players in marine ecosystems.”
– Isabel Lara, Monterey Bay Aquarium Director of Communications

Play Ball!

DC-area Avalonians had a blast last week at Nationals Park, where we saw the Nats take on the Mets and shared laughs, snacks, and some much-needed downtime. These moments remind us how important it is to connect beyond the screen and celebrate the people who make work meaningful. Thank you to Maria Croes, Bill Tucker, Libby Abbott, and the whole DMV Gatherings Committee for organizing the perfect late-August outing.
