Helping kids develop healthy racial identities

At a time of renewed conversations and strife about racial divisions in our country, the National Museum of African American History and Culture recently announced the expansion of its Early Childhood Education Initiative to help children develop a healthy racial identity, thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. As NMAAHC’s website describes the initiative: Structured to be joyous and fun, this museum-based curriculum is designed to help young children of all backgrounds develop healthy racial identities and other social skills. Bridging the fields of early childhood education, human development, museum education and developmental psychology, ECEI programming encourages young children to be comfortable with human diversity, recognize unfairness and develop the capacity to stand against prejudice.  Visit NMAAHC’s website for more information.

Farewell, food deserts…

We’ve all heard of food deserts—residential areas that are far from markets with fresh produce and other healthy food choices. One quarter of Baltimore’s residents live in a food desert. So the Maryland Food Bank is partnering with Kaiser Permanente (which made a $1.7 million grant) and the Bon Secours Health System to help make the food desert a thing of the past—by bringing fresh produce to West Baltimore residents’ doorsteps through a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. For more details, check out the recent article in NextCity.org.
